A Harvest of Death

On farmland surrounding Gettysburg, the greatest battle of the war took place July 1-3, 1863. This photograph by Timothy O'Sullivan was made July 4th. It shows two dozen of the 43,000 casualties of the battle, hours after General Lee's retreat.
"Here are the dreadful details!" Gardner writes. "Let them aid in preventing such another calamity falling upon the nation."
