A Harvest of Death
On farmland surrounding Gettysburg, the greatest battle of the war took place July 1-3, 1863. This photograph by Timothy O'Sullivan was made July 4th. It shows two dozen of the 43,000 casualties of the battle, hours after General Lee's retreat.
